Week 10 Term 1 2022 Newsletter

Dear parents,

The capital of Australia could have been Albury. So said our guide at the National Museum of Australia during the Year 11&12 trip to Canberra last week. Apparently the suggestion was given serious consideration, but I must confess to quietly breathing a sigh of relief that the idea didn’t take off.

Growing a heart for our nation and its people was the thing that did take off, as our senior students learned about the great events and characters, legal and parliamentary processes, native flora and dedicated service to Australia’s establishment, defence and growth.

Not wanting to miss out on the fun, Year 9&10 students, along with some 11s&12s, attended the open day at Charles Sturt University this week. The purpose of the visit wasn’t to sign up every student to a university course, but to raise eyes to a horizon of possibilities. At this, it certainly delivered.

Congratulations to all students on their efforts at today’s House Cross Country Carnival, run in frustratingly windy conditions. They strained to the finish line like they were coming to the end of Lent. Thanks especially to Mr Griffin for his expert organisation of the event and to all staff for nursing the students around the track.

Warm regards,

Ian Smith

Principal

New Roundabout

Scheduled drainage and roundabout construction at the intersection of Pioneer Drv, Urana Rd and the school carpark exit are now underway.  Council will make every attempt to minimise disruption during morning and afternoon peak periods but may at times be required to divert traffic and pedestrians during construction. We thank you for your patience.

Primary Assembly

The primary classes will be holding an end of term assembly on Friday 8th April at 10.00am in the school Hall after morning Mass.  Parents are more than welcome to attend.

Term One Holidays

The last day of Term 1 is Friday 8th April.  Term 2 commences on Tuesday 26th April.  We wish all families a happy and holy Easter as well as a relaxing and safe school holiday break.

Lost Property

The Griffin family have been unable to locate a school winter jacket and have asked for families to check if they may have it at home.  Their family name is written on the jacket tag.

Please check the lost property baskets located near the side door to the hall for any lost property or uniform items.  The lost property baskets will be cleared out at the end of term.

ICAS Testing

SMMC will be holding ICAS testing again this year for those students who wish to participate.  ICAS is an online academic competition designed to assess student’s higher order thinking and problem-solving skills.  Please see the attached letter for further information.

New Arrival

Congratulations to our Year 5 teacher, Ross Hayward, and his wife, Bridget, on the recent birth of Alexander James.  May God’s blessings be with you at this special time.

Unwell Students and Good Hygiene

A friendly reminder that unwell children must not be sent to school.  We also ask parents to please remind their children about the importance and practice of good hygiene. Please notify the school in the event that a family member is diagnosed with an infectious disease, such as Covid-19, chicken pox, influenza, pneumonia, diphtheria, mumps, gastroenteritis, measles, meningococcal and pertussis (whooping cough). Thank you.
