Dear Members of our Community of Faith,

In this month of May, we turn our hearts and minds to Mary, our heavenly mother. It is a great opportunity to rekindle the devotion to Our Lady through praying the Rosary as a family.

During last holidays I read a book called Why Children Matter by Johann Christoph Arnold. It was a wonderful read with many little pearls of wisdom, so if you’re looking for a good book see if you can source a copy. By the same author is a book called Their Name is Today. It really highlights the importance of helping children to be children, especially with the pressures of today’s world. I have numerous copies available in my office if anyone would like one for a $5 donation which will go to the publishing company. Well worth a read to refocus on what is most important for our children.

Parents and Friends Meeting / Fete Subcommittee

At last Thursday’s Parents and Friends Meeting, we had a small but energetic group. P&F Funds were committed to the following areas: Big Books for Junior Literacy; Cupboards for storage in the Staffroom; Shelving for the Yr1/2 Classroom; Hand Tools for Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) and Hobbies. We also discussed ideas for our upcoming fete in October. We will be holding a Fete Subcommittee Meeting next Wednesday 25th May at 2:30pm. Many hands make light work, so please get along if you are able to. If you can’t be there, but can help out, please let us know and we can get in touch. Our next Parents and Friends Meeting will be on Thursday 4th August at 7pm, so please put in your diary and get along. The more support we have the better. We look forward to seeing you there!

Our Lady Help of Christians

Next Tuesday 24th May we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians. We will celebrate Mass at 12:00pm and then have a procession afterwards. Primary school girls are asked to dress in white dresses for the procession. Altar Boys please bring your cassocks and surplices. The SRC are running a lunchtime BBQ, with a sausage in bread for $1. Students an also purchase 2 cookies for $1 and a Hot Chocolate for $1. Thanks to Miss Godwin and the SRC for their efforts.

ICAS Assessments commenced on Tuesday with 7 students sitting the Digital Technologies Exam. Please see the ‘Dates for your diary’ section for the other exam dates. All the best to the students with these exams. Give it your best.

BIPSA Cross Country

I had the pleasure of escorting our primary school representatives to the Border Independent Primary School Association (BIPSA) Cross Country last Friday at the Jindera Golf Course. The weather held out and it was a great event. All the students are to be commended on their positive participation and determination in giving their race a red hot go. A special mention to Samuel Perry who came 2nd in a very close finish. Thanks to all the students who represented our school.

Staffing News

With Miss Godwin finishing up on 17th June, we will welcome Ms Narda Reid to SMMC for the last week of this term and for all of Term 3. Next term in Week 4 we will welcome Miss Victoria Costello, who will to do her final teaching placement and internship with us. At the completion of Term 3, Victoria will receive her teaching qualification and will be on staff with us for Term 4. Victoria is currently studying at Notre Dame University in Sydney and will be a great asset to our staff.

This week we chose one of the overarching school rules ‘Respect our Environment’ to focus on. The school rule ‘Take Care of All Property’ falls in under this. If students were seen to be upholding this rule, their name was secretly written on a raffle ticket and placed in a box. We will draw this out each Thursday morning at  Assembly and the winner will get hot chips on the Friday. Congratulations to Brigid Horsfall who is this week’s winner! You have to share with the Principal!

Mrs Barber finishes up today and will be having her baby very soon. We wish Caroline and her family every blessing during this exciting time.

We keep in our prayers all those children receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend. May the Holy Spirit strengthen them and guide them always.

God Bless

Luke Burton (Principal)
