Dear Members of our Community of Faith,

Welcome back to the 2017 School Year! A special welcome to the Darlow, Blood, Dawson, Garcia, O’Brien, Stead, Suttie and von Marburg families who join our school community this year. It was wonderful to have all your children (our students) back on Tuesday to make the school come alive again. I thank all our students and staff for such a calm and productive start to the school year.  We begin this year with 130 students, 76 in the Primary School and 54 in the Secondary School. Certainly takes a little longer to file in and out of Mass on a Friday!

House Captains

At Saint Mary MacKillop College we have two houses, St Francis of Assisi (Green) and St John Bosco (Gold). These two houses will battle it out across the year in swimming, cross country and athletic events to try and get the silver wear. Congratulations to Bernadette McCrohan and Matthew Woods who were elected as Captains for Assisi and to India McAlister and Tom Irwin who were elected as Bosco Captains. I am sure these young people will show great leadership for their respective teams throughout the year.

During the holidays the Firmager family welcomed a little girl, Annelise Josephine and the McAlister family also had a little girl named Arabella. Congratulations also to Joe and Lily Murphy who welcomed their first baby Esther – our first alumni baby!

Fun Maths Skills Class

Next Tuesday 7th February Mrs Horsfall is beginning some morning maths classes. These classes will run from 8:15 – 9:00am and focus in on essential mathematical skills. Any secondary students are encouraged to come along for these sessions to help improve their skills.

Bus Passes

Forms are required to be filled in for ALL Kinder, Year 3 and Year 7 students and for any new students. All other students will automatically be sent new bus passes for this year. Please get your form in ASAP if you haven’t already. Thank you.

SMMC Welcome BBQ – now Sunday 12th February

We will now be holding our beginning of year BBQ on Sunday 12th February to take a bit of pressure off having it so soon and hopefully this will enable lots of our families to come along and enjoy each other’s company. Meat will be provided by the school and parents are asked to bring along a salad to share. This is a great opportunity to meet with other families at the school and builds a sense of community. See you there!

Swimming Carnival

Our annual swimming carnival will be held on Wednesday

15th February. This is always a terrific day in the SMMC Calendar and I encourage you to get along if you can. We will again be needing helpers on the day, so please fill in next week’s form if you are able to help out. The more people we have, the more we can share the load. Handicaps will be in place this year for James Byrnes and Erin Woods who got through the water way too quickly last year.

Classroom Meetings

On Monday 13th February Kinder to Yr.7 parents have the opportunity to come along to class meetings. The purpose of these meetings is to inform parents about the curriculum, routines and expectations of each class and to answer any queries you have. This will assist us in working together to help the children get the most out of their learning this year. Some of the feedback on last year’s parent survey was that the transition from Primary to Secondary school can be a challenge, therefore this year we have extended these meetings to incorporate the Yr.7s. We hope you find these meetings informative. Times are as follows:

Kinder – 3:30 – 4:00; Gr.1/2 – 4:00 – 4:30; Gr.3/4 – 4:30 – 5:00 ; Gr.5/6 – 5:00 – 5:30; Yr.7 – 5:30 – 6:00

Late Arrivals/Early Departures

Please sign in or out of the office if you are arriving late or leaving early with your children. If our child needs to be absent please email Fiona at We need this information to comply with Government Regulations.

We have needed to change dates for the mid-year break, so please take note of this in the Dates for your Diary section. I hope this doesn’t cause any inconvenience.

I hope your children have settled in well to school this week. Please touch base with their teacher/s if you have any concerns. It is great to get onto things early rather than stewing on it. We look forward to working together with you all this year.

God Bless,

Luke Burton (Principal)
